Met Gala 2027 to Spotlight Everyday Fashion, Putting Jeans and T-Shirts in Focus

The fashion world may be preparing for a surprising change at the 2027 Met Gala, where extravagant designer creations could give way to something far more familiar: jeans, T-shirts and everyday clothing.

The museum has announced a new exhibition titled “ExtraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” which will open in May 2027. The exhibition will explore how clothing that people wear in their daily lives can become something extraordinary when reinterpreted through fashion and design.

Around 230 garments and fashion pieces are expected to be included, ranging from simple denim jeans and basic tops to elaborate creations made using unconventional materials such as paper and plastic.

Among the pieces planned for the exhibition are a leather jacket by Japanese designer Junya Watanabe, luxurious dresses inspired by puffer jackets, and designs that recreate the appearance of denim jeans.

“The ordinary is never as simple as it seems,” said Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the museum’s Costume Institute.

The announcement comes after controversy surrounding an earlier plan to dedicate the museum’s 2027 fashion exhibition to British fashion designer John Galliano.

“It was important to me to create an exhibition that was as challenging, provocative and beautiful as the exhibition for John Galliano would have been,” Bolton said.

According to The New York Times, Anna Wintour, the head of media company Condé Nast, was not involved in selecting the replacement exhibition theme.

Although the exhibition’s concept has now been revealed, one important detail about the 2027 Met Gala remains unknown. Organizers have yet to announce the official dress code for the event’s famous red carpet.

Will Celebrities Trade Extravagant Outfits for Everyday Looks?

The Met Gala has become internationally famous for its extravagant fashion statements, with celebrities regularly wearing elaborate gowns, unusual accessories and highly imaginative designer creations.

However, Bolton appears to hope that visitors will embrace a much simpler approach. He has expressed the wish that people attending the exhibition will wear their favorite jeans and T-shirts, rather than feeling that fashion must always involve something luxurious or extraordinary.

At the most recent Met Gala, model Bhavitha Mandava attracted attention with an outfit that stood out precisely because it was relatively understated. Her appearance featured Chanel jeans paired with a transparent top with a zipper detail at the upper section.
