Wedding cakes have become an integral part of the ceremonies lately. Even the tiniest error on it, say the icing or the design, can become a major disappointment for the bride and groom. However, for Andrea and her husband, the disappointment dawned on them a year after their wedding ceremony took place. Following the tradition of preserving the first tier of a wedding cake to be savored on the couple’s first anniversary, Andrea, who goes by @itsdreaestefania on TikTok, took a bite off their year-old wedding cake. The couple filmed while they joyfully fed each other the cake until a realization struck Andrea.

Celebrating their first anniversary, the husband scoops out a bite of cake and lovingly feeds it to his wife. After a few chews, Andrea frowned in a confused state. She said, “Is this carrot cake?” Her husband, indifferent to her confusion, barely reacts as he tastes the cake. Meanwhile, a note on the video reads, “Him: instincts kick in to calm me down and say nothing is wrong.” When Andrea tries to confirm if that is the flavor the couple decided upon, he gently nods. “We didn’t choose carrot cake for our wedding. We chose amapola,” she asserted.

Suddenly, it dawns on the husband, raising his eyebrows to ponder over it. The couple comes to a mutual understanding. As the creator reiterated the error, her husband broke into a chuckle and said, “And you tell that a year later.” Turns out, the wedding cake was sent in with the wrong flavor, and the couple did not even realize it until their first anniversary. “Now you know we didn’t eat at our wedding either, lol,” the post was captioned. The hilarious moment caught the wind on the internet and received more than 1.9 million likes.

People were confused and fascinated at the same time. One person (@xo_kika) wrote, “The way she wanted to call that baker up and complain.” Another (@daboii.arron_) mused, “Bro ate the real one and bought another cake.” “His face is saying, ‘Well, what are we gonna do about it now,’” penned someone else (@lexhart98).

There were a few questions about why the couple was feasting on a year-old cake. “Am I being slow? How do you have some of your wedding cake a whole year later?” asked @livicarrx. A few users rushed to explain. “You’re supposed to freeze the cake and eat it on your one-year anniversary. It’s an old tradition,” said @murphiebones. Similarly, @princessgazzy pointed out, “I genuinely thought everyone knew of ‘the top cake tier for the first anniversary tradition.’ Cake freezes extremely well, so like it’s a cute idea!!!”

According to the New York Times, 46% of brides and grooms planned to or did save the top tier of their wedding cake for their anniversary in 2019. This tradition has been followed on since the 19th-century convention where partners saved the top tier for their first child’s christening, often believed to be good fortune.
