A large-scale overnight drone attack has struck an industrial facility in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, with preliminary reports suggesting that one of the country’s major oil refineries may have been among the targets.
Gleb Nikitin, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, said more than 100 drones had been intercepted or destroyed during the attack. Although the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear, his initial statement indicated that the industrial facility had suffered considerable damage.
According to the governor, no injuries had been reported in the initial assessment. Emergency services were dispatched to the affected area to assess the situation and begin responding to the damage.
The incident has drawn particular attention because of the suspected identity of the facility involved. Several Telegram channels monitoring the war in Ukraine claimed that the attack targeted the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery in Kstovo, a major Russian oil-processing complex.
The refinery is one of the significant oil-processing facilities in Russia and plays an important role in supplying petroleum products to domestic markets.
Its production includes diesel fuel and aviation fuel, making the facility relevant not only to the wider energy industry but also to transportation and other sectors that depend on refined petroleum products.
However, the available information does not establish whether the refinery’s production operations were directly affected or whether specific processing units sustained damage.
Russian regional authorities had not provided a detailed technical assessment of the suspected refinery’s condition in their initial statements.
The governor also warned residents that damage to industrial infrastructure could lead to temporary disruptions in essential services.
Some areas could experience interruptions to electricity supplies, while hot water and heating services might also be affected. These restrictions were expected to remain possible while repair crews worked to address the damage.
Ukraine Intensifies Attacks on Russian Energy Infrastructure
The reported strike comes amid an expanding campaign of Ukrainian drone attacks against Russian energy facilities.
Throughout the year, Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted oil refineries, storage depots and export terminals in an effort to disrupt an important part of Russia’s economy.
The energy sector remains particularly significant for Moscow because petroleum exports and related industries generate substantial revenue. These earnings help support government spending, including the financial resources needed to sustain Russia’s military operations.
Such attacks can also force Russian authorities and energy companies to devote additional resources to protecting industrial infrastructure.
The suspected targeting of the Kstovo refinery would fit into this broader pattern, although Ukrainian officials had not publicly confirmed responsibility for the specific incident in the information available at the time of reporting.
The attack also follows reports of a major fire at another Russian oil refinery in the Samara region earlier in the week.
That incident was also suspected of being connected to a drone strike, although the circumstances surrounding the fire had not been fully established.
Russian Strikes Leave Hundreds of Thousands of Ukrainian Families Without Electricity
While Russian facilities were reportedly coming under attack, Ukraine was also dealing with the consequences of renewed Russian strikes against its own energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said approximately 280,000 households had lost electricity following Russian attacks on Friday evening.
According to Zelenskyy, around 200,000 households in Dnipro and the surrounding region were without power. More than 80,000 additional households in the Kyiv region were also affected.
Zelenskyy said Russian forces had struck a combined heat and power plant in Kyiv, along with four electrical substations in the Dnipro region.
The Ukrainian president said repair and restoration efforts were underway as authorities worked to reconnect affected communities.
For Russia, Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries and oil-related installations represent an effort to place pressure on an economically important sector.
For Ukraine, Russian strikes against power plants and electrical substations have created repeated challenges for households, businesses and essential services.
The suspected attack on the Kstovo industrial facility and the reported power outages in Ukraine demonstrate that energy infrastructure continues to play a significant role in the conflict.
As both sides maintain their campaigns against strategic installations, the security of refineries, power stations and electricity networks is likely to remain a major concern in the months ahead.
