A mother and her 20-year-old daughter have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, Canad.
The victims were identified as 48-year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed, 20. The two women had been reported missing on November 1 after failing to return from what was expected to be a short hike lasting only a few hours.
Their bodies were discovered in a hiking area near Bella Coola, prompting an investigation involving the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Authorities believe a wild animal may have been responsible, although investigators have not yet established exactly what happened or how many bears may have been involved.
Search teams eventually located the remains of the two women in a trail area near Bella Coola. Jennifer’s remains were discovered on Monday, while those of her daughter were found the following day.
According to authorities, evidence recovered at the scene pointed toward the possible involvement of an animal. Investigators are now working to determine whether one or multiple grizzly bears were responsible for the suspected attack.
The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service is continuing its efforts to identify and locate any bears that may have been involved in the incident.
Inspector Jeff Tyre said investigators have not yet determined whether a single bear or more than one animal participated in the suspected attack.
He also explained that any bear captured during the investigation would undergo an assessment. If authorities establish that an animal was involved in the fatal incident, it would be killed in accordance with provincial guidelines governing conflicts between humans and wildlife.
These measures are intended to reduce the risk of further attacks and protect public safety.
Family Remembers the Close Bond Between Jennifer and Selah
Beyond the investigation, the tragedy has left relatives struggling to come to terms with the loss of two family members who shared an exceptionally close relationship.
Jennifer and Selah were described by their relatives as inseparable, with many of their interests and activities bringing them together.
Jennifer’s brother, Josh Balcarras, spoke to CBC about the special connection between the mother and daughter, describing them as being “like two drops of water.”
He explained that the two women shared many interests and rarely spent time apart.
“When Jenny went for walks, Selah was always by her side,” he said.
Jennifer had recently moved to Bella Coola, hoping to begin a new career and build a different future for herself. The move represented an important new chapter in her life, one that she had apparently been looking forward to.
Following their deaths, relatives launched an online fundraising campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support the family during this difficult period.
Grizzly Bears Are an Important Part of British Columbia’s Wildlife
The suspected attack has also drawn attention to the presence of grizzly bears throughout British Columbia, where the animals play an important role in maintaining the natural balance of the ecosystem.
According to figures from the provincial Ministry of Environment, an estimated 10,000 to 13,000 grizzly bears live in the region. The species is classified as vulnerable and receives protection under Canadian environmental legislation.
Wildlife authorities explain that conflicts between humans and bears are more likely when animals are surprised, feel threatened or believe their cubs or food sources are at risk.
This is particularly relevant in areas where hiking trails pass through natural bear habitats. People visiting these locations may unknowingly enter areas where bears are feeding, resting or protecting their young.
